i don’t recall ever really having a hero growing up. Except maybe Nikki Giovanni. I met her once in college. She’s the sassy, creative person i hope i am…but another woman who touched me with her spirit, her wisdom, her words and her achievements i think making her a true hero to me is Beah Richards .

beah richards

Beah was a poet-activist-actress-playwright and author and up until the very day she died she was upbeat, humorous, spunky. Beautiful.  I saw a documentary about her on i believe  it was HBO and i was amazed by her presence. Her spirit, her laugh. I wanted to be a woman like that. Creative, beautiful, intelligent, spunky. 🙂

so if i’ve never acknowledged her as a hero before. She is. and every once in a while i think i need to be reminded of how beautiful, wonderful and amazing it can be to be a creative, loving intelligent black woman in this world. it’s easy to forget when bills need to be paid, and drama runs high.  I need a reason to get up in the A.M. A reminder of what is possible and doable and needed to be me, to be a daughter, friend, mate, sister, artist, etc..

peace and many thanks to the ancestors. may we live a life worthy of your work.and learn from the lessons you have given and left us.
